As Wisconsin became populated, its economic base included an agricultural mainstay, but diversified over the years to include industrial manufacturing and tourism. Wisconsin is a leader in the art of making cheese, producing more than 250 different varieties. It also is a leading center for research and development of biotechnologies. Madison is the capital of the state and the seat of Dane County. It is principally a residential city with more than 200,000 residents, who live on tree-lined streets in a thriving city located on the shores of four scenic lakes. Downtown Madison occupies the narrow isthmus between Lakes Mendota and Monona. Madison is a commercial, educational and manufacturing center, and the distribution point for a productive farming region. It sports several exceptional cultural institutions, such as the Madison Opera, the Wisconsin Veterans Museum and the Madison Symphony Orchestra.

Wisconsin’s most valuable state resources are its rugged natural beauty and abundance of water. The focal point of outdoor recreation in Wisconsin is the 15,000 inland lakes, 43,000 miles of rivers and 650 miles of Great Lakes shoreline. Recreational boating, fishing, water-skiing and swimming are hugely popular and contribute a significantly to the state’s economy and tourism industry. Lake Winnebago is comprised of 137,708 acres and is the largest lake in the state. The Winnebago Sturgeon spearing season is a popular sport and monitored closely by fishery biologists and conservation wardens.

Other exciting area attractions include the picturesque Wisconsin Dells with its many natural rock formations, Sugar Bowl and Grotto Islands, the Glacial Park and Dells Ducks, a unique transportation system used both on land and water. Additional scenic points of interest are the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the Ice Age National Scientific Reserve. Metropolitan cultural destinations begin with the Circus World Museum at Baraboo, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and the State Agricultural Museum at Stonefield.

The state of Wisconsin is rich in recreation, education, culture, affordable housing and friendly people. But don’t forget the Green Bay Packers, the only publicly owned NFL franchise, and Summerfest, an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records as the “World’s Largest Outdoor Music Festival.”
